Underfloor heating – Designing your system

In order to ensure your system is as cost effective and efficient as possible, it is essential to design the system around the needs of the customer and the property. At TotalUFH.com we offer a full CAD design service.

At TotalUFH.com we offer complete underfloor heating solutions tailored to the requirements of your project. Underfloor heating is one of the most cost effective and efficient ways to heat your home and is ideal for a new build, extension or renovation to your current property.

However, in order to ensure your system is as cost effective and efficient as possible, it is essential to design the system around the needs of the customer and the property. We offer a full design service and create a bespoke system for each individual project.

What might the design process include?

  • Heat loss calculations: When designing your underfloor heating system, we may need to calculate the heat loss your system will have to deal with. Estimating the heat loss accurately means that the system can be designed to produce just the right amount of heat to warm the space whilst offsetting the heat loss properties of the room. In order to do this correctly we will consider a number of factors, including insulation levels, the number of external walls and windows, ceiling height and any rooms above or below as well as ventilation losses. You cannot underestimate the importance of accurate heat losses as this enables us to design the best underfloor heating system for your home. It is vital that a suitable floor construction is recommended taking into account,  house construction, heat requirement, heat source and other factors.

  • Designing the system to meet heat demand: This involves working out how much heat energy the underfloor heating system needs to emit in order to heat each room effectively. Our team will need to consider:

    • Heat output of the system – The heat output of the floor construction should be taken into account to design the most suitable solution.

    • Heat source – this can have a significant impact to the overall efficiency of the system, higher pipe density (pipes closer together), reduces the flow temperature while keeping the necessary output.

    • Floor coverings – Some floor coverings conduct heat better than others, however remember that underfloor heating can be used with almost all floor coverings. You just need to remember to check the compatibility with the manufacturer and allow consideration for heat transfer, durability and expansion. Find out more about options for floor coverings

    • Any unusable floor space -There may be areas of the floor that cannot be heated, such as under kitchen units. This is important because it will affect the amount of usable floor area and – as such – the amount of UFH tube that can be installed – potentially affecting the overall heat output of the UFH system in that room.

  • Installation drawings for your system: All of the above allows our team to create bespoke installation plans for your underfloor heating system. The spacing of the underfloor heating tube, water flow temperatures and flow rates are all designed to match the user’s and property’s requirements. We can then provide detailed and full CAD designs. These detailed drawings make installing the underfloor heating straightforward and will specify the amount of underfloor heating tube needed for each room along with exactly how this should be installed, how they correspond with the manifold and which areas have thermostats for individual room or area temperature control.
