When selecting underfloor heating, one of the most important factors to consider is the floor construction type.
Considering your floor construction type
Warm water underfloor heating, also known as wet underfloor heating, is an extremely efficient and effective method of heating and is suitable for a wide range of projects. The system uses water for heating so can be linked to almost any heating source, from a traditional boiler to renewable technologies such as a heat pump or biomass system.
Providing you with complete design freedom in your home, zero cold spots and an extremely safe and efficient way of heating your home it’s easy to see why underfloor heating continues to grow in popularity.
Perhaps you are building a new home or extension, or you may want to add underfloor heating to an older property – there are underfloor heating options to suit all these projects. Solid or screed floor construction
Solid concrete or block and beam floors are the most common type of construction for ground floors and also more used on intermediate floors in new build properties. They are ideal for underfloor heating installation as they also allow the use of a screed.
This screed, whether trowel applied or liquid screed, acts as a thermal mass, conducting heat and helping to heat the room evenly.
In a screed system, underfloor heating pipes are installed on insulation, with staples used to fix the pipes prior to the screed being laid. Alternatively, a beam and block system uses clips to secure the underfloor heating pipes.

Underfloor heating for joisted timber floor
Joisted floors are suspended timber floors that use joists to support the floor deck. This is a common floor construction for upper floors.
With joisted floors, underfloor heating can be between the joists or within the deck itself.

Retrofit or overlay underfloor heating
If you are considering underfloor heating, but concerned about disruption in your home and the need to dig up your current floor, then an overlay system may provide the answer. Laid directly over the existing floor, there is no need for excavation and there are a number of options available. Offering flexible installation and minimal floor height increase these systems are becoming more and more popular, particularly in older properties where underfloor heating may have not otherwise been an option.
